You’ve heard of the “Great Books”? These are their evil opposites.
From Machiavelli’s The Prince to Alfred Kinsey’s Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, from Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto to Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa, these “influential” books have led to war, genocide, totalitarian oppression, the breakdown of the family, and disastrous social experiments.
And yet the toxic ideas peddled in these books are more popular and pervasive than ever. In fact, they might influence your own thinking without your realizing it.
Fortunately, Professor Benjamin Wiker is ready with an antidote, exposing the beguiling errors in each of these evil books.
Witty, learned, and provocative, 10 Books That Screwed Up the World provides a quick education in the worst ideas in human history and explains how we can avoid them in the future.

How much do you want to bet this heroic author wasn’t brave enough to mention the single book that has been responsible for hundreds of wars, billions of lives lost, endless pain, suffering, existential dread, division between peoples, horrific events (exterminating groups of people, “civilizing”), etc.
EG The Bible.
I find it VERY hard to believe that “Beyond Good and Evil” has caused even a fraction (0.000000001%) of the damage caused by that. Even Mein Kampf, what exactly did this do? It’s terribly written and had nothing to do with starting the war. 99% of edgelords spouting the same nonsense as him have literally never read it, and any active neo-nazi’s would have it to be edgelords, but none of them read it and went “WHOA HE’S TOTALLY RIGHT”.
Bizarre book. Thanks for the upload though, it is interesting.

*what I meant to say is neo-nazi’s have the book to be edgelords, but none of them were random people “curious” about the ideas, went and read it and went “WHOA HE’S TOTALLY RIGHT” and then became neo-nazi’s, they were already like that and then got the book to be “real”, ergo it never actually affected anything.

Well, the author does have a Phd. (theological ethics)
and an MA (Religion) [Amazon’s “About the Author”] so might not share your views(and mine) about the bible.
Likewise he’s not to keen on Origin of Species by Natural Selection, but likes the |Darwin in titles:
a. The Darwin Myth
b. Moral Darwinism
Basically seems to be an author whose target audience is christians. (An observation not a criticism either of the author, or of christians)

Well, I sure hope the Bible is front and center as it is indisputably the most harmful book ever written.
But somehow, I doubt it…

A list for the book banners now running rampant in the US.
Send this to DeSantis and the other MAGAs. Though they probably have already banned all these.
“The descent of Man” by Darwin….
The aim: just leave one book on the shelves: The Bible.
Not that any of them have read even that.

Glad to see this book isn’t banning sodomite pornography.

Haven’t “read” the book yet, but I’ll bet it doesn’t include “Silent Spring” the book that is respnsible for millions of deaths.

> It was not until the release of James Jones’s biography of Kinsey in 1997 that the lab coat and scientific screen were ripped away to reveal the seething fleshpots of Kinsey’s private life. If his secret sexual saturnalia had seen the light of day fifty years earlier, Kinsey’s book would have been revealed as what it really was: a thickly disguised attempt to force the world to accept his own unnatural sexuality as natural.
“seething fleshpots”, what.
> Her real goal was to convince the West that the rigors of Christian sexual morality were unnatural, and that its anxiety-producing inhibitions are something we’d all be happier without.
“natural” this “natural” that.
> This destruction was foreshadowed in Hobbes’s and Rousseau’s respective states of nature, where raw and predatory sex, open and unleashed from any moral order, replaced an older notion of sexuality, secretive and bound up between a man and a woman and finding its natural outlet in the monogamous family, a family sanctified by God in the model of the Holy Family.
This guy really can’t stop talking about sex; weird obsession.

@Brillo…..oh the irony of the illiterate hanging out on a website for books…any attempts to blame Carson by the tobacco industry and shifty politicians was/is nonsense. Just like your post. Still believe the Earth is flat too?

The Bible can’t be taken as a whole. The first half (Old Testament) arguably was only harmful to those that believed it, culminating in the destruction of their Temple before the first century A.D. was even finished. And then for the next six centuries, the second half (New Testament) was used for empire-building and cohesion. For half a millennium after that, the world bore witness to what happens when a religion wants to be an empire. The next millennium is the result of empire vs empire, reason vs faith, and, very specifically, avarice vs avarice. God (and Jesus) took a backseat, instead replaced by lip-service In Their Name to do the bidding of people justifying their human tendencies.
Indigenous genocide isn’t Godly or anything that Jesus Would Do but those committing it slept soundly believing they were doing God’s work. I don’t remember any of the red text saying ‘go forth and kill infidels’ nor some convoluted parable about doing so, but Muhammad, The Crusades, and then the whole Age of Discovery must have read between the non-existent lines. How else do you explain The Age of Reason when it was Christians killing Christians and Muslims killing Muslims simply because they weren’t the “correct” Christians or Muslims (which carries on through today in some parts of the world). At least Nationalism gave God a break in having to choose sides, both praying for victory, both praying for their enemies to meet the gates of Hell.
Aliens sifting through the ashes of our world will almost undoubtedly believe we were polytheists, everybody with their own God resembling Greece and their pantheon. Their scholars will likely ponder how, if the Gods were so similar, we couldn’t just agree to ‘be one’ thereby uniting our species into a hairless-ape-empire and going forth into the cosmos like they had. Sure, they would have crushed us like the heathen heretics we were but then they wouldn’t have been denied spreading the word of their deity to us as they cleansed the Universe of our presence.

@Roger2020 The greatest lie you tell yourself is that we all aren’t queer in our own way. For instance, your posts indicate a special queerness in your brain I’m not convinced you actually believe. Believing in the nonsense you post, it does make you part of the acronym you condescend to misunderstand.

Well, Kinsey’s was tome was intrinsically sexy. That was its purpose.
On Darwin: the harm was effected by the pernicious distorting of the theory into Social Darwinism - eugenics, contempt for the “weak,” valorising of the “strong” - the appalling consequences ought not require further gloss here.
Similarly, with Nietzsche - disdain for the “weak” - that they ought to be facilitated in their extinction; hatred of the “Slave Morality” of Christian charity & compassion; obsession with the Übermensch.
Granted, many of his ideas were grossly simplified & weaponised for & by the national socialists. His sister’s expediently careful editing of his work to this end was instrumental, of course (he had at least actually criticised racial nationalism & anti-Semitism, for inst).
Wars are caused & motivated by greed & fear - desire for territory, resources, power, wealth - fear that the enemy will act first to take your land & resources. They are not caused or motivated by the Sermon on the Mount.
Kinsey’s research methodology was & is deeply problematic. It included observation of & participation in sexual activity, sometimes involving co-workers. He encouraged his staff to engage in a wide range of sexual activity. Kinsey filmed sex acts which incl co-workers in the attic of his home as part of his “research.” James H. Jones, author of Alfred C. Kinsey: A Public/Private Life, & British psychiatrist Theodore Dalrymple, among others, have speculated that Kinsey was driven by his own sexual needs.
Some of the data publ in the 2 Kinsey Reports bks is controversial in the scientific & psychiatric communities, owing to Kinsey’s decision to interview volunteers who may not have been representative of the general pop (behaviour & attitudes of convicts, prostitutes, paedophiles, etc.). U of Chicago sociology professor Edward Laumann also argued that Kinsey’s work was focused on the biology of sex & lacked psychological and clinical info & analysis.
Kinsey wrote about pre-adolescent orgasms using data which report observations of orgasms in over 300 children aged from 2 months up to 15 yrs. This info was said to have come from adults’ childhood memories, or from parent or teacher observation. Kinsey said he also interviewed 9 men who had sexual experiences with children & who told him about the children’s responses & reactions.
Little attention was paid to this research at the time, but where he had gained this info began to be questioned 40 yrs later. It was later revealed that Kinsey used data from a single paedophile & presented it as being from various sources.
Jones wrote that Kinsey’s sexual activity influenced his work, that he over-represented prisoners & prostitutes, classified some single people as “married,” & that he incl a disproportionate number of homosexual men, which may have distorted his studies.
Bailey et al., in their 2016 review of the sexual orientation literature, stated that Kinsey’s survey likely overestimated frequencies of nonheterosexual attractions & expressions.
The programme that Hitler described in his “book,” he later went on to carry out. War for vast territory in the East, to facilitate the German race above all others; clearance & destruction of “inferior races” such as Slavs & Jewish people; destruction of liberal democracy; persecution of “undesirables,” etc. etc. It’s inclusion is entirely justified. It would have been useful if democratic leaders had paid more heed to what it contained.

I find the bible quite useful…….as back-up butt wipe. I always keep 1 or 2 under the bathroom sink. Great price too - free at participating motels & hotels. There were 4 of us back in the day, living in a S-hole dive, but too drunk to care. I never saw 1 roll of toilet paper in that place in 2 years, but there were plenty of ripped up bibles. It was so trashed, I would go visit my folks just to use their shower.

Those who say the Bible is the most harmful book ever written have likely never read it and certainly never studied it. All you know is that it says you shouldn’t do a lot of stuff that you think you should be allowed to do and you are angry about it. You can’t have it both ways though - you cannot say there is no moral authority while also telling me what I have to accept and do. You can’t cannot be a moral relativist without being a hypocrite, but it seems that hypocrisy is your base fuel, so you’re just fine with that regardless.

From that author of The Darwin Myth - a biography of Charles Darwin which claims Darwin was involved in an ideological conspiracy by members of the late Enlightenment which aimed to remove God from science - comes a List of Things I Don’t Like So Neither Shall You Or Something-Something GOD WILL HATE YOU!!!!11eleven

It’s not that the Bible is harmful, but that far too many, even now in the information age, have not examined it for themselves. Some dismiss it, or ignore it, or rely on others to tell them it is useless. Others allow grifters to mislead them about what it says and blindly follow those con artists.
I’m not sure which group is worse off, really.
My advice - seriously and honestly examine it for yourself - if you dare.

Religiously bigoted narrative. Promising title, shame it was wasted on this BS.

They should up the list of pernicious books to 12: The DSM and The Koran.
