We need to talk about the family. For those who are lucky, families can be places of love and care, but for many they are sites of pain: from abandonment and neglect, to abuse and violence. In this short and exhilarating text, Sophie Lewis takes the reader through the various histories of family abolition, from utopian socialists to queer, Black and indigenous feminists and into the future, imagining what life might be like after the family. Radical and utopian as it undeniably is, family abolition is the real movement working to undo the care austerity that fundamentally structures life under racial capitalism.
The argument for family abolition has become even clearer under COVID 19 where the myth of the nuclear unit has been seen to be a fiction. We were told to keep a ’social distance’ (from everyone… except family). Consequently, those without family were left alone, isolated and abandoned. There is no justice in these rules, which keep loved ones from being with one another, treat children like property, and shore up wealth (or poverty) within a class. What is the alternative?

It appears that Ms. Lewis has, either intentionally or ignorantly, ignored world history. Whenever the family unit is disrupted, the nation dies.

To encompass “world history”, your definition of “family” will have to stretch beyond modern recognition. An extended family all living together in one big house, with a new husband moving in with his partner’s family; families of multiple men married to a single woman and taking turns having children together; children passed away to professional caretakers and not knowing their parents until they’re teens; small, nomadic groups of a few adults, some partnering with each other and all raising children together; mothers and children alone, with fathers nowhere to be seen, etc…
As for the author’s position, it’s understandable that, when (like me, and maybe her) you’ve been discarded by your family and seen the same done to many of those around you, you look around for some alternative. A system that assumes everyone has a family leaves many without support when they need it most. The better approach, though, must be in something supplementary that doesn’t take away from people; help with building new families that are legally recognised, and fall-back supports for people those without.

The ideal behind the kibbutz was not “government/corporate farm”, but still I disagree with her, yes. It would go very far, though, to have some official recognition for say “two people who love one another very much, but don’t want to be married or have sex or etc and you are a sister / uncle / whatever to me” to declare one another as officially a family and be recognised for e.g. hospital visits and making legal decisions for one another. And then there might also be a system that takes into account people who have no family at all being in need of more support.

A lot of the negative reviews here seem to have totally missed the point of Sophie Lewis’ book (or, perhaps more likely, didn’t actually listen to it).
You don’t have to wholeheartedly agree with every single sentence in a book, just to get something out of it. Not every book is meant to be religious dogma…these are ideas to provoke thought and reflection on the way our society is structured, and ways we might improve on our current way of doing things.
(I suppose it’s no surprise that many of the commenters who found this book objectionable are Christians, lol)
If you’re reading reviews to decide whether to give this a listen, my advice would be to simply read the synopsis of the book that’s listed above, and if the ideas sound interesting, give it a listen. It’s good “food for thought.”
