The award-winning author of “Founding Brothers” and “The Quartet” now gives us a deeply insightful examination of the relevance of the views of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Adams to some of the most divisive issues in America today.
The story of history is a ceaseless conversation between past and present, and in “American Dialogue” Joseph J. Ellis focuses the conversation on the often-asked question “What would the Founding Fathers think?”
He examines four of our most seminal historical figures through the prism of particular topics, using the perspective of the present to shed light on their views and, in turn, to make clear how their now centuries-old ideas illuminate the disturbing impasse of today’s political conflicts.
He discusses Jefferson and the issue of racism, Adams and the specter of economic inequality, Washington and American imperialism, Madison and the doctrine of original intent.
Through these juxtapositions—and in his hallmark dramatic and compelling narrative voice—Ellis illuminates the obstacles and pitfalls paralyzing contemporary discussions of these fundamentally important issues.

Stop worshipping them like they were gods. They are dead old men from an irrelevant time. The reason America is so divided is you have people trying to build a better future held back from people stuck in 200+ years in the past.

@loonyboyx - What a simp!
That work you are so quick to condemn is what has given you the right to free speech. To have an opinion and state it without government condemnation. It’s called the First Amendment, I suggest you look it up.
Yes, those men weren’t gods, and no they shouldn’t be worshipped, but even though their work contained a number of mistakes and has is, it’s a damn site more than you will ever achieve.

Very grateful, alnilam, looks like substantial stuff. Incredible to reflect how much the founders got right as they crafted this great Enlightenment project, the first real democratic republic, with far-seeing rights and duties.

Also, imagine what kind of Constitution and Bill of Rights the present-day politicians would cobble together? It certainly wouldn’t work for over 200 years, it might even take that length of time for something to be agreed upon.
