The untold history of slavery and resistance in California, from the Spanish missions, indentured Native American ranch hands, Indian boarding schools, Black miners, kidnapped Chinese prostitutes, and convict laborers to victims of modern trafficking
“A searing survey of ‘250 years of human bondage’ in what is now the state of California. . . . Readers will be outraged.” —Publishers Weekly
California owes its origins and sunny prosperity to slavery. Spanish invaders captured Indigenous people to build the chain of Catholic missions. Russian otter hunters shipped Alaska Natives—the first slaves transported into California—and launched a Pacific slave triangle to China. Plantation slaves were marched across the plains for the Gold Rush. San Quentin Prison incubated California’s carceral state. Kidnapped Chinese girls were sold in caged brothels in early San Francisco. Indian boarding schools supplied new farms and hotels with unfree child workers.
By looking west to California, Jean Pfaelzer upends our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and reveals how the enslaved in California fought, fled, and resisted human bondage. In unyielding research and vivid interviews, Pfaelzer exposes how California gorged on slavery, an appetite that persists today in a global trade in human beings lured by promises of jobs but who instead are imprisoned in sweatshops and remote marijuana grows, or sold as nannies and sex workers.
Slavery shreds California’s utopian brand, rewrites our understanding of the West, and redefines America’s uneasy paths to freedom.

I do appreciate these uploads. As always, they showcase the utter hypocrisy, the pure deception, if not the utter lack of a human soul, of the Communist Activists that comprise 99% of all modern Academia.
First, I will not bother with ANY recounting of slavery, that does not start with Islam, and their role in creating and continueing the slave trade. And end with the fact that it continues down to this day. And, of course, the insanely brutal manner is which slaves were treated by Muslims, by Islam.
Second. There was one, and exactly only one group of individuals who ended slavery: Protestants. And they suffered for it - there were censored, de-banked, and de-personed… and murdered… MAID… Mmmm. That sounds familiar for some reason…
Anyhoo. Except for the odd small island colony, no slaves freed themselves.
To deny these things, is to take away recognition from those who suffered and died to actually end the slave trade. As much as that could be done.
Doing this, and instead transfering their honor and, yes, their glory, to any other, is an act worthy of utter and permanent condemnation. The kind of act exectued by soulless vermin.

@NukerRabbit is a clown who doesn’t like to read books, especially if they don’t conform to his baseless, historical ideology!
You are a dumb SOB! Which came first Christianity or Islam? And way before that we had the Roman Empire which had slaves but they were benevolent right! If you go back further we had Egypt, remember them.

there’s no actual evidence of slavery in Egypt. We’re to believe those people spent 400 years co-mingled with no cross cultural exchanges. There’s just as much proof that Martians have spent the last 400 years in the US. More, actually.
That being said, they should just break California up into four smaller states so the Democrats get more votes, rather than giving all of California the same strength as Wyoming.

NukerRabbit is either a paid Russian troll or one of the most deeply embedded shut-ins in the United States.
Hey NukerRabbit, is there someone who looks after you? Can I speak to them please?

NukerRabbit is right in saying how Muslims treated slaves. There are reports of people who came back from the Middle east and reported horrors that go far beyond all other countries that had slaves. And slavery probably goes back 10’s of thousands of years, if not far further than that.
One thing that was particularly cruel is the muslims (who purchased black slaves from Arica for at least a thousand years - Look up the Sahara slave trade), anyone who survived the walk through the Sahara were castrated, since the muslims didn’t want black slaves to reproduce. And going back in those times, infections were rampant and many died from that. All slavery was horrid, and all countries and races on this planet have had slaves as far back as history goes.
