In the midst of a seemingly endless supply of mass-manufactured products, we find ourselves nostalgic for products bearing the mark of authenticity - handmade furniture, artisan breads, craft beers, and other goods produced by human hands. What often goes unnoticed is the transformation of our understanding of craft - or rather, craeft - in the wake of industrialization.
In Craeft, archaeologist and medieval historian Alexander Langlands argues that our modern understanding of craft only skims the surface. His journeys from his home in Wales have taken him along the Atlantic seaboard of Europe, from Spain through France and England to Scotland and Iceland in search of the lost meaning of craft.
Reaching as far back as the Neolithic period, he combines deep history with scientific analyses and personal anecdotes. We follow the author as he herds sheep, keeps bees, tans hides, spins wool, and thatches roofs. We learn scythes work much better on tall grass than the latest model of weed trimmers, that you can spin wool using a large wooden spoon, and that it was once considered criminal to work on animal hides before a requisite 12-month soak.

This ‘New Age’ nonsense is designed to devolve Western Civilisation.
There is no such thing as ‘craft’ as defined here- there is maths, science, engineering and industry.
The Chinese are rising to become the greatest Super Power in earth History- entirely because the West has been corrupted to give up the ghost. It is ironic that hyper w-oke Apple depends on first class engineering (while moving the vast majority of that enginnering out of the USA), yet has produced the TV show Foundation- Asimov’s tale of the fall of the USA via a fantasy space empire, borrowing from the fall of Rome.
Excellence in engineering made the USA- when peeps from all over the earth were able to ESCAPE their laughable inefficient ‘craft’ based homelands and move to a new land where they could aspire to levels of achievement unencumbered by the old ‘craft’ bosses.

“New Age” is a meaningful term that one struggles to relate to this material. It hardly plots too “devolve Western Civilisation.” The book, quite on the contrary, is a telly-don archaeologist’s paean to forms of ancient, careful, manual craftsmanship that have been lost to our world of mass production and consumption. I appreciate how the book traces our changing understanding of the term.
Almost needless to say, Pebbles188’s comment is a deeply unhinged paranoid nationalist mini-rant disconnected from the substance of this very smart, measured book.

Do yourself a favor and watch the BBC Farm series. Alex is pure magic.

When I hear the likes of pebbles188 and similar Trumptards it amazes me that Americans invented the atomic bomb and put the first man on the moon.
Then I realize they didn’t.
