Socialism was man’s most ambitious attempt to supplant religion with a doctrine claiming to ground itself in ’science’. Indeed, no religion ever spread so far so fast. Yet while socialism had established itself as a fact of life by the beginning of the 20th century, it did not create societies of abundance or give birth to ‘the New Man’. Each failure inspired new searches for the path to the promised land: revolution, communes, social democracy, Communism, Fascism, Third World socialism. None worked, and some exacted staggering human tolls. Then, after two hundred years of wishful thinking and fitful governance, socialism suddenly imploded in a fin du siecle drama of falling walls and collapsing regimes. This book traces this fiery trajectory through sketches of the thinkers and leaders who developed the theory, led it to power, and presided over its collapse. Muravchik’s accomplishment in ‘Heaven on Earth’ is to tell a story filled with character and event while at the same time giving us an epic chronicle of a movement that tried to turn the world upside down — and for a time succeeded.

Social Democracy as a philosophy did not fail, it’s alive and well in several advanced democracies. The failure of some Communist/Socialist systems was caused by their highjacking by authoritarian leaders. The likes of Stalin and Maduro with their greed and corruption made Social Democracy fail in those countries.

@Nomad860,
Agreed. Virtually every liberal democracy in the world today would qualify as a Social Democracy, with some sort of social security, health care, welfare, etc… The US being one exception.
If they got that wrong… it suggests that what could have been an informative book is more likely to just be a diatribe.

Name a country where Socialism has succeeded, or is alive and “well”.
The book is an excellent and indispensable history of the derangement of Socialism

The comments that praise “social democracy” (a silly term) fail to realize that this is not a socialist government, as it is checked by capitalism and democracy.
Socialist regimes reject both these proven systems, an obvious example being the failed state of Venezuela which was not “hijacked” by a tyrant, as one commentator seems to think is the only reason these systems fail.
Sweden is an another example of failing socialist policies, having opened the floodgates to mass Third World immigration, its welfare system is overburdened to the point of collapse.

It’s important to learn from history. Thank you for your contributions, Goomer.

Guatemala under Arevalo and subsequently Arbenz was quite a successful offshoot of Socialism that the US helped quash to protect the profits of the United Fruit Company. The Secretary of State at the time had vested interests in United Fruit Company. Eventually the United Fruit Company with the support of the US was able to influence local Guatemalans to distrust their government and become more sympathetic to overturning it. The US succeeded. It then attempted to look for a probable cause, namely the forbidden C word; Communism / USSR influence. While breaking into government offices, they were unable to find a shred of proof that the USSR had any influence.
The result was decades of civil war, countless deaths, and high dissatisfaction in the far-right US backed Guatemalan regime.

Another example of success: Yugoslavia under Tito.
