Perhaps you have heard of the horrible stories of the Spanish, Portuguese, or French inquisition, the Catholic body of persecutors who would arrest the supposed “heathens” and accuse them of witchcraft, heresies, blasphemy, adultery, and a whole list of other sins or crimes. Torture, interrogations, executions, burnings, and other inhumane methods were used to then force, coerce, or kill the victims of this Catholic organization within the church at the time.
We are talking mostly about medieval times, when the power of the Catholic church extended throughout Europe. The Inquisition, typically called the “Holy Inquisition” in Middle Ages clerical terms, was a series of organizations within the Catholic Church whose objective was to fight heresy. Research studies of the archives have exposed that the large bulk of sentences were penances, but that cases of repeat unrepentant apostates were given nonreligious courts, where they were normally executed or sentenced to life. The Inquisition was established in 12th-century France to fight spiritual variance (such as apostasy or heresy), particularly amongst the Cathars and Waldensians. The Middle Ages Inquisition describes the inquisitorial courts that existed from this time till the mid-15th century.
Discover the pain, the frustration, the hypocrisy, and the drama behind the inquisition. Learn more about their motives, their methods, their superiors, and their murdering.

@ukulele12345 How is this crap? I’ve not listened to it to see quality of the writing, but the Inquisition and the historical events in the book description happened. Unless you’re also denying this part of history also didn’t happen.

Much of the popular understanding around the historical events has been distorted by Reformation-era propaganda. Primarily in English-speaking countries. The actual historiography is, as usual, far more interesting. Tbh, the description seems to place this very slim volume firmly in the former category.

“The Inquisition, (here we go)
The Inquisition, (no no no)
We really wishin’, that you’d go away!
But the Inquisition is here and its here to stay!”
Mel Brooks - History of the World Pt 1.
Main reason why we need to keep the church and state far apart! Thank you Goomer!! Great upload!

The secular powers counted virtually any accusation a sentence of death, whereas Church courts were the only ones to employ due process (unknown to the secular cts of the time). Consequently, when given the option, an accused would choose the Church courts.
History is fascinating, but Mel Brooks is great too.
The reason the medieval era is p’haps the most intriguing is that just about everyone has got a mistaken, distorted impression of it.

Thank you

The catholic Inquisition was actually at that time revolutionary modern and actually most of the times way better than normal “justice” of the time. Propaganda and bad movies then made it into tge boogeyman.

@aronar I wonder what happened to all Muslims of iberia?

Why brutally invade Spain in the first inst? Why brutally invade, subjugate & colonise any country - in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe? It won’t make you loved, people won’t want you to stick around, when push comes to shove.

Someone’s pretending to be caesar!
It’s clearly an imposter - he’s objecting to imperialism by someone other than Britain.
January 15th, 2023
Yeah, tiny exaggeration there, Bytbiter, but you’ve seized the conch. Poor, put upon Blighty, wot wot!
January 16th, 2023
@caesar963 any actually good books you recommend on the subject?

For historical analysis:
Inquisition by Edward Peters
Characters of the Inquisition by William Thomas Walsh
The Spanish Inquisition by Henry Kamen
Spain: A Unique History by Stanley Payne
But, as ever, it’s necessary to read broadly & to compare the quality & depth of evaluation to be had. There’s an abundance of myth & propaganda to strip away, in order to reach the substance.
And for an even more sober reflection: Mel Brooks, with delightful musical accompaniment.

Just more propaganda for the ignorant “massess”.
