Over the past few decades, the complicated divides of geography, class, religion, and race created deep fractures in the United States, each side fighting to advance its own mythology and political interests. We lack a central story, a common ground we can celebrate and enrich with deeper meaning. Unable to agree on first principles, we cannot agree on what it means to be American. As we dismantle or disregard symbols and themes that previously united us, can we replace them with stories and rites that unite our tribes and maintain meaning in our American identity?
Against this backdrop, Our American Story features leading thinkers from across the political spectrum - Jim Banks, David W. Blight, Spencer P. Boyer, Eleanor Clift, John C. Danforth, Cody Delistraty, Richard A. Epstein, Nikolas Gvosdev, Cherie Harder, Jason Kuznicki, Gerard N. Magliocca, Markos Moulitsas, Ilya Somin, Cass R. Sunstein, Alan Taylor, James V. Wertsch, Gordon S. Wood, and Ali Wyne. Each draws on expertise within their respective fields of history, law, politics, and public policy to contribute a unique perspective about the American story. This collection explores whether a unifying story can be achieved and, if so, what that story could be.
“Offers…scholarly insight, personal wisdom, and an embodiment of America’s questing spirit.” (Jonathan Rauch, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution)
“In this enlightening book, scholars from many fields will help you understand the conflicting narratives that influence our political thinking and behavior today.” (Jonathan Haidt, New York University Stern School of Business)

“As we dismantle or disregard symbols and themes that previously united us,”
There’s the money quote.
Did we get to vote of on the way forward or is it being imposed on us? What if half the population doesn’t seek these changes?
The progressives first try persuasion to reach their utopia and if that doesn’t work then the tried and true methods come in to play. Re-education camps, “thought crimes”, etc.

Sounds interesting, man. People used to unite around civic nationalism & its shared ideals. (All ethnic groups contribute, partake & pledge themselves to this political creed, with its attendant ideas of public service, the public good & self-sacrifice: “Ask not what your country can do for you, etc.”)
However, since the Second World War, the wisdom hath determined that all forms of nationalism are evil & must be hastily jettisoned. Even the forms which were actually conducive towards the establishment & development of democracy.
If people actually knew their history, quite apart from even agreeing upon it…
Exclusive “racial” nationalism is where the project darkens, as history tends to demonstrate.

I think Norman Rockwell paintings were the American story, and that continues in the rural areas. The urban areas, they’ve created their own, separate, society.

Quite so; but I’m not sure that I ever properly grasped the intent of those paintings. I mean, all those dogs playing poker - it just lacked artistic realism for me. I didn’t get what Norman was trying to say.
Oddly enough, I really appreciate works portraying dogs playing pool. Far more verisimilitude.

@caesar963,
Sorry, but the card playing Dogs was created by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge in 1894.
Rockwell specialized in people - my fav was “Tipping the Scales” from the Saturday Evening Post - and Yeah, I actually read SEP! (Though not when this was published… but close!

As Humphrey Bogart said in Casablanca — I was misinformed. (Might the great “Tipping the Scales” have been a Leslie Thrasher?)

caesar963 LMFAO, Norman Rockwell NEVER painted any quadruped playing cards, smh I can’t stop laughing, You are on the mark in him lacking artistic realism, he was NOT too interested in reality and realism in his art, because 1. He was a city boy, Brooklyn NY to be more exact. Where, as we all know, doses of reality reach toxicity levels before noon, so its consumption must be curtailed. It’s why, I believe, we have such a disproportionate representation in producing talent (in contrast with other U.S cities); that begin trends, innovators in music, style, fashion designers, art etc. where creativity is has to be the dominant trait & driver. It’s also the talent that facilitates freedom to bend reality to your taste. Norman went for total fantasy & created the Americana Mythology: Coca-Cola, Wholesome Holiday family gatherings, Suburban bliss, summers by the lake…#escapism ?? Lol Perhaps. Rockwell is a Landmark!
