The battle has become legendary: 85 British soldiers, in a small outpost, holding off six full-scale Zulu attacks with only 27 casualties. But a brand new look at this infamous clash reveals that several things about the myth just don’t add up. While there was certainly incredible courage, there was also some astonishing cowardice, and increasing evidence reveals that the legend of Rorke’s Drift was created to divert attention from earlier mistakes that led to the slaughter at Islandlwana.

“the worst kind of new look history” Of course you prefer the whitewashed version.

Mixed feelings about this book. The book deals with the personalities involved in the Anglo-Zulu wars and the reports of the battle but not so much about the battle itself.

The extraordinary awards of so many VCs at Rorke’s Drift (11 compared to, say, one on the whole of D Day) does indeed point to a publicity distraction from the disaster at Islandlwana, But the politics shouldn’t detract from the extraordinary defence mounted by those present.

Revisionism yet again! A contemporary ailment.

Thanks. It might take a few hundred years or so for truth to show its ugly head, but isn’t it great when it does?

what rot, what makes you think you have a monopoly on the truth

Excellent book. In no way am attempt to re-write history as some paranoid far right Americans would have you believe.

All history is, by definition, revisionist. It’s always compiled after the fact, sometimes LONG after, and always with the addition of hindsight. Eyewitness accounts, memoirs, contemporary and later documents all have some measure of “spin” to them, even if it’s unintentional. Add in the personal experiences, points of view, and motivations of authors, and you’ll never have a work that’s “100% factual”. Saying that one doesn’t LIKE the point of view of a particular work is fine, but throwing the label “revisionist” on it is empty and meaningless.

The book is O.K more fiction than history, if you want a decent book on this subject read this one The National Army Museum Book of the Zulu Wars by Ian Knight Historian.

The British Army gets butchered by “Nasty Natives” at Islandwana - The Government is in SERIOUS trouble with the background to that mess, and suddenly 11, ELEVEN, VC’s are awarded at an action the next day. was there bravery? Of course there was, was it hyped?, you guess.

Really the best book “The Washing of the Spears” covers the politics etc. Rorkes’ Drift was a tiny action in a vast backdrop of Africa. VC’s are awarded for courage under fire. It was created for the ordinary soldier to receive. Before this, only officers were granted battle honours. The movie is riddled with details that were altered for the story line. Basicallly true. I believe the Colour Sergeant(at the time the youngest) died in the 1920’s -30’s.
