This book explores the moral and ultimately theological problem of slavery, tracing how the Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions have tried to reconcile modern moral certainties with the infallibility of God’s message, in particular on the issue of sex-slavery. It investigates the challenge of defining what slavery is in the first place, showing that this remains more than ever a highly politicized question. This book lays out how Islam viewed slavery in theory, and also how slavery was practiced across the reality of Islamic civilization. Finally, it explains how Muslims have argued for the abolition of slavery in Islam, asking whether their arguments are sincere and convincing.

sex slavery is kind of inevitable when a man can marry 4 women. id bet a large reason why islam expanded so fast was because men went to war for sex slaves but it collapses as soon as the expansion stops

@fall19 its forbidden to take sex slaves and even major imams said the same. the Ottoman and some arabs still wanted the slavery . this issue written well in Bernard Lewis’s books. he made it clear that even slavery in İslamic nations were better than europe and other worlds.everyday people had maids that was the ‘’slavery”. if you want western comment on the issue look for Bernard Lewis.İslam said you can only be slave to God not to another human. and if you want your major sins to be forgiven than buy and free a slave. thats it. when a muslim insists on slavery this does not mean all islam wants it. texts and verses are the facts here. Bernard also did great job for explaining why middle east fall and western world got way ahead. and its not 4 wives or slaves. even prophets in christianity and judaism had many wives. hell even now women are more than man. so if every human being marries someone. what will happen the ones that left out? Will they become public use now?

@fall19 this is why when bernard lewis showed his work on middle-east many dumb people like you said he is biased and that he wants arabs and turks money.mixing Quranic verses of what is alowed and what other people did is not İslam. I can give you many examples from christianity but this doesnt make christians now justice.go read and study properly and if you gonna mainly sht on religion remember sources are open to anyone.cherry picking and saying -aha thats the reason.people would laugh at your examples. academics are not a place for people like you.sources you gave conflicts even with your own scholars. who is biased? most of work is done by western scholars. even history books sold in middleeast done by western people.so there is a problem here. Actions are a direct manifestation of one’s beliefs. All words are lies if any one action contradicts it. One “sinner” is proof of a belief system being false when the belief system is based on an ALL POWERFUL PERFECT BEING.
If they really were, their belief system would prevent sin perfectly.
Blaming mistakes on the users/customers is what shady companies and con people do to escape responsibility for their crimes. Religion is like a gun manufacturer that refuses to acccept their products could ever even be used to facilitate someone in their intent to kill anything, let alone a human.
Religion is objectively a belief system for power, rape, murder, and slavery intended to help the people who practice those things cope. It’s self help for bad people so they don’t feel bad.

Um, @ApeGuy, the most vocal supporters of slavery in the US used the Bible to rationalize their actions.”Slaves shall obey their masters” was the most common scripture used. If you’re going to judge a religion, judge them all by the same standard. In the Old Testament, God directs a bear to kill and eat a handful of CHILDREN who had the audacity to mock a bald man. The moral gymnastics of Christians is really no different from Islam and Judaism. Books written over a thousand years ago will always find a way to excuse the ugliness of their societies.
