Do “In God We Trust,” the Declaration of Independence, and other historical “evidence” prove that America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles? Are the Ten Commandments the basis for American law? A constitutional attorney dives into the debate about religion’s role in America’s founding.
In today’s contentious political climate, understanding religion’s role in American government is more important than ever. Christian nationalists assert that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and advocate an agenda based on this popular historical claim. But is this belief true? The Founding Myth answers the question once and for all. Andrew L. Seidel, a constitutional attorney at the Freedom from Religion Foundation, builds his case point by point, comparing the Ten Commandments to the Constitution and contrasting biblical doctrine with America’s founding philosophy, showing that the Bible contradicts the Declaration of Independence’s central tenets. Thoroughly researched, this persuasively argued and fascinating book proves that America was not built on the Bible and that Christian nationalism is, in fact, un-American.

Expect Tucker’s head to explode when he hears these truths. Remember in 1954, during the McCarthy (when the right tried to import Nazism to Ameria) is when “One Nation Under God” was injected into the pledge

Ah yes, conflation … cherished by the intellectually lazy everywhere :D

Never forget, McCarthy was right!!

@cdtoad
McCarthy wasn’t trying to import Nazism to America. The whole anti-communist movement was loaded with “ex”-Trotskyites (that would go on to become the “Neocons”), who were going after Stalinists.

Un-American?! An unfortunate title.
Are you now, or have you ever been, a Judeo-Christian? Crucify them!
A “fair & balanced” imposture from the “Freedom from Religion Pretext.” Stormtroopers, advance savagely.
If one can’t trust an ideologue, who in all heck can one trust?

More like this.

This is very long winded, does provided loads of grounded points but is repetitive.
Also the author doesn’t seem to know very much about Abrahamic religions. At one point he mentions that Hell is throughout the bible, it’s not in the Jewish text at all and not in the Christian bible either.
It reminded me of the people who don’t know what is and isn’t in the US Constitution.
His knowledge of American history and the Constitution was much better. His views on Christianity is more what many people believe or their opinion on what the biblical text say vs what they actually say. He hits on that too by pointing how little most Christian’s know about he bible based of surveys and such.

Interested. Considering his stated allegiances & subjective perspective - both of which are reasonably explicit - how does he then establish his objective bona fides? Does he touch on the subjects of anti-Christian & anti-theist bigotry and bias?
I have to say, given my own studies of history and the law, his effort to separate Judeo-Christianity from the founding is all the way uphill. Acres of factual historical evidence would have to be elided. For inst, strategic networks between the colonies were established during the First Great Awakening. Such connections hadn’t existed prior to then. These networks of communication could then be actuated in the cause of revolution.
This ties Christianity directly in to the scene of the founding of the American nation. (It has no possible alibi)
Consequently, it would be necessary for the author to create his own myth.

Of course the right wing nutjobs will condem or do I dare say bring their cancel culture to this book and it’s many truths.

I’ve never considered myself a Christian nationalist, but America was not birthed in a vacuum. Andrew L. Seidel is a constitutional attorney at the Freedom from Religion Foundation, no need to say more.

It’s about time we cancel Jesus (bloody do-gooder!).

ccreader is straight-up lying, despite following a book condemning liars to hell. Hell is often translated throughout Jewish texts and the Bible from Sheol, Hades, and Gehenna. Mark 9:43, King James Version: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:” There’s the usage of hell in the New Testament, in spite of ccreader claiming hell isn’t used once in the New Testament. Christians today are pathological liars when they want to throw their hat into politics for their own petty, impotent intentions.
This can only be a brilliant, insightful book against them.
