he secret history of one of the largest—and least-known—rescue operations of World War II
Between 1940 and 1943, a group of Polish diplomats in Switzerland engaged in a wholly remarkable—and until now, completely unknown—humanitarian operation. In concert with Jewish activists, they masterminded a systematic program of forging passports and identity documents for Latin American countries, which were then smuggled into German-occupied Europe to save the lives of thousands of Jews facing extermination in the Holocaust.
With the international community failing to act, the operation was one of the largest actions to aid Jews of the entire war. The Forgers tells this extraordinary story for the first time. We follow the desperate bids of Jews to obtain these lifesaving documents as the Nazi death machine draws ever closer. And we witness the quiet heroism of a group of ordinary men who decided to do something rather than nothing and saved thousands of lives.

It nice to see that some of Switzerland’s people are being recognised after the tarring they often received regarding Nazi gold etc.
Many forget that racism was not a national divide during the Holocaust. They wrongly accuse all members of a country, or political party of being racist. When Thousands of Jewish people owe their lives to the courage and honour from the most unlikeliest people. Who went that extra mile and risked all to help people who would later go on to condemn them.
I don’t agree that it’s a racist Evil that refuses to Die; which I am certain the person wrote in error, However, I do look forward to enjoying this audiobook.
I appreciate the fact that you are willing to share these books. Many use the site only to leach and winge when things do not go the way they wish complaining regards content or opinion.

I can’t remember the quote or the person, But the message was that it would be akin to being killed twice should the memory of the holocaust die.
It should never die. It should be rammed down the throats of every human on the planet on a regular basis. An open example of how we are in no way the superior spieces on the planet. We are mindless when in a crowd.

Amen to that, brother.

Academia places little importance on “Group Think”, other than as an aside. Maslow, and others, are pushed as more important. Maybe the simple, Norming, forming… is a method of dumbing down? There is little to support it - in fact it ignores outcomes that affect each stage and leads to adjustments: without which, situations such as “GroupThink”, one of the greatest dangers of any group is allowed to manifest. But, Hey, what would I know?
Accountancy was not my initial degree choice. I initially studied Criminology (Until I could not listen to the drivel put forth as factual, (Phrenology had a more realistic approach to many of the accredited methods - lol) Agreed that as the youngest and an evolving discipline it is in its infancy (A generation old) I then spent a year studying Anthropology with Gender Studies.
Unfortunately, one had to be taken with the other. Not surprisingly after two attempts at the “Arts” I decided Accountancy and Law was the way forward.
Here at least, the “Children citing Children, on how to be Men”, typical of academia within the Arts, was not prevalent.
One would think that with such examples of atrocities carried out by so many political ideologies, the world over, that there would be more emphasis on “Group Think”. However, that would be insulting to those being taught.
Obviously those studying degrees, groomed into leadership positions, would never lower themselves to be led by the hysteria of the masses.
I believe that a part of every degree should include at least a small discussion as to what led to a madness that almost consumed the world. Its importance is manifest in preventing a recurrence.
One only has to look at the increase in NeoNazis, and other groups to realise that most individuals believe that they are in control of their own thoughts. “Group Think” states otherwise. History Shows otherwise. Intelligence does not factor into crowds, The crowd becomes an entity of its own.

What I found almost bewildering about the Criminology component of the law degree was the sheer amount of bamboozling theories thrown at us. Initially interesting (it’s in the same family as psychology really - Cesare Beccaria was great), it sort of descended into incoherence at the time for me. If it wasn’t just a module, it could have been elaborated slightly more coherently, but there we are. When I reflected back on the notes they were quite interesting, however. So it could be the whole context palaver. The professor was cute though.
I enjoyed the comparative aspect, where we looked at different countries’ approach to crime & culpability. The Japanese (very intriguing, as always); Scandinavian; tribal systems, etc.
In Ireland, we often tend to compare our justice & penology (oo-er) system & outcomes to the countries of the Anglosphere; but these are larger, dissimilar jurisdictions to ourselves. A more apposite basis for comparison would be other, smaller European polities, such as Belgium & Norway. They have comparable population sizes, and they’re also politically stable, etc.
It’s unsuitable to use gun-totin’ enormous America as an analogue, merely because they speak a “similar” language to ourselves.
On “group think” - historically, in more aristocratic Europe, the big objection & barrier to democracy was the fear of “Mob Rule” (Gladstone, even though he’s thought of as the champion of the people, feared this & wanted to keep the franchise restricted & bounded). And the fear of the mob was given some weight by the French Revolutionary Terror, the slaughter in the Vendée & the French Rev Wars. Nietzsche had no time at all for the masses.
That great philosopher, Vinnie Jones, observed that those vulnerable types who watch soap operas should be legally precluded from voting. Some people love his body of work.

I agree wholeheartedly, Nietzsche discounted 50% of the world’s population simply because of sex.
Gladstone rightly feared the masses. Unions were becoming dominant and the new fear of bolshevism. He was loved by the masses due to his destruction of the slums. An act, he pursued out of fear of returning soldiers refusing to return to the status quo that had been the pre war era.
Better housing was his solution. After Tanks in Edinburgh and other cities made it clear to Joe Public what the government’s response would be to any Bolshevism. Stick then Carrot, The British Way. lol.

I had to look up Vinnie Jones, I don’t have a TV, I got rid of the Damned Box 20+ years ago. My son was brought up without and he too refuses to have one. I stick to books. I choose my own information and not subject myself to indoctrination. I don’t drink the “kool aid.

Sorry for splitting the post into bite size posts, but I’m back on the meds again and concentration is becoming an issue.
When one considers the ramifications of “GroupThink” on the German people in the early to late 30’s. One can see how it influences and then sets in motion a chain of events. Subversion is also a major factor. As an example. A rational individual finding oneself in a “Mob” that shouts racial hatred. The energy of the mob exerts its own will on the crowd. This is often seen after football matches. An innocent bystander is attacked based upon the shouted beliefs and the chants increase as does the hatred.
At that point the individual is screaming the same hate filled nonsense as the crowd. Asked prior to this encounter if S/he wishes to build Gas chambers to exterminate millions of Jews. The answer would be a look of horror. Yet after the Mob. Group thought has taken hold.
The individual wants to justify their involvement and will stand up for this new found belief. In business we see this occur where against all reason a group will continue to try to get a failing system to work. The dangers of “GroupThink” is that it can be exploited easily. The victims are already open to suggestions. Their minds are malleable as their subconscious is still stuck in the justifying stage. Any person telling them they were right, reinforces this conviction and introduces loyalties they would have previously questioned.

You mustn’t be a soccer fan either. I’m not a sports’ guy - my best friend since I was eight is a veritable encyclopædia of sporting matters - if only he could dedicate all of that “processing power” to Gender Studies. Vinnie Jones is a retired soccerball man. I only know him from the films.
That’s a bold move getting rid of the tv. Of course, virtually all we do now is on some screen or other. Some tellys now would take up the front wall of your house. But they’re flat.
The rational individual person is certainly lost in the mob/crowd, the transformation is very rarely good. One of the misfortunes of Germany in that Weimar period was its exposure to the US downturn/depression. Outside the US, Germany had the most exposed economy. In times of crisis, the extremes of left & right always exploit the desperate people within the population. When the economy showed brief signs of recovery in the early 30s, electoral support for the national socialists, socialists & communists actually declined. This caused the opportunistic nazis to panic & made them realise that they had to form a coalition govt as quickly as possibly, lest they lose the favourable crisis altogether.

I do have large monitors, My pride and joy a 65″ interactive whiteboard. Just no terestrial, satalite or cable broadcasts. 100% accurate regarding sport, (Darts Excluded). One of Germany’s problems was the fact it was landlocked and Germany could not expand as the rest of Europe was, although it tried in Africa. Added to the restrictions imposed by the French. The country was being actively crippled. Hitler was many things, Charismatic was one of them. Rarely does a Charismatic leader end well for a country, or the rest of the world.
