A vast listenership wants better access to the ancient words and ideas of the Bible. In The Bible Doesn’t Say That, Dr. Joel M. Hoffman walks the listener through dozens of instances of mistranslations, misconceptions, and other misunderstandings about the Bible. In 40 short chapters, Hoffman covers fundamental theology, morality, lifestyle, and biblical imagery:
* The famous New Testament quotation “God so loved the world” is a mistranslation, as are the titles “Son of Man” and “Son of God”.
* The Bible doesn’t call homosexuality a sin, and it doesn’t advocate for the one-man-one-woman model of the family that has been dubbed “biblical”.
* Jesus had siblings, in spite of the Catholic rhetoric about the “ever-Virgin Mary”.
* The Ten Commandments don’t prohibit killing or coveting.
Even many of the Bible’s details end up distorted: The fruit in the Garden of Eden wasn’t an apple, it wasn’t a whale that swallowed Jonah, and many animals marched onto Noah’s ark in groups of seven, not pairs. The Bible Doesn’t Say That succinctly explains each misunderstanding, detailing the nature of what went wrong and offering insight into the original meaning of the world’s most popular book.

> “The Bible doesn’t call homosexuality a sin”
That’s true, because the social construct of “homosexuality” as an aspect of personal identity did not exist until its invention by 19th century German sexologist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, the first “gay” man in history. What the Bible says is that a man laying with another man as one would lay with a woman is am abomination and under the law of Moses worthy of the death penalty. Make your decisions about your religious affiliation or lack thereof accordingly, but stop lying about what the Bible says.

The bible comes in handy when you have no toilet paper. I’ve rolled joints with it too.
Someone once said the bible is like a person, if you torture it long enough you can make it say anything.
P.S. there’s no invisible sky daddy watching you.

apnea I trust you would not tell everyone that you would use the book from “The Religion of Peace” as toilet paper.

Which bible and which version? And the problem with pretending someone has the ultimately accurate interpretation is that the OT has been amended various times. For instance the original version of Exodus has Moses’s sister Miriam playing a huge role, and she is in fact considered a major prophet. It was changed later to write her out and give Moses a much more important, sole leadership role.
Theres many more instances of changes, so it boils down to which version is being interpreted.
However as someone who is not religious i advise reading OT through a metaphorical lens, it actually makes more sense that way :-)

The description above is from the publisher, not from me. I agree with InsaneCrazyMad regarding what the Bible says about homosexuality. The New Testament is also very clear about condemning it.
I like what JoeBlack999 replied to the extremely inappropriate remarks of apnea.
This book was posted as an interesting read, not to cause controversy (or rudeness)!

@kendavies except that the Bible has been translated so many times it’s difficult to determine what was really said. Written 40-60 years after Jesus died, with none of the books agreeing with the others, written in Greek, when Jesus didn’t preach in Greek. There are a lot of terms in the original that can be debated, way before the many “versions.” Remember that the audience at the time accepted and even valued homosexuality and Greeks were the ones who readily accepted Jesus in much greater numbers than did the Jews. The bottom line is that Jesus didn’t speak on homosexuality. His message was about the imminent coming of the kingdom of God. But we insist on using it for current political and social guidance in all the wrong ways.
