First published in 1997, The Story of Jane recounts the evolution of Jane, the underground group in Chicago that performed abortion services before the procedure was legalized. An extraordinary history by one of its members, this is the first account of Jane’s evolution, the conflicts within the group, and the impact its work had both on the women it helped and the members themselves.
This audiobook stands as a compelling testament to a woman’s most essential freedom - control over her own body - and to the power of women helping women.
A movie based on the book, titled This Is Jane, is being produced by Amazon Studios, with Michelle Williams attached to star.

Such an important book, and written by Laura Kaplan, an esteemed member of the Jewish community - just like Heather Booth, the founder of Jane - no less.
With International Holocaust remembrance day having just passed, it’s important to remember just how much the Jewish community has done to preserve women’s right to choose. Had Hitler gotten his way, it’s likely that the future of abortion rights would have also perished in the gas chamber at Dachau.

@cheezer - I was certain at first that you were being ironic. Invoking the Holocaust in support of the argument for abortion?! In the US since 1973 there have been well in excess of 60 million abortions. In the world overall since 1920 there have been well over 1.5 billion abortions.
Bizarrely, you unthinkingly assume that the killing of the child in the womb is an unconditioned moral good, and then use erroneous history as a prop.
In actual fact, the Nazis promoted a culture of death - at all levels. Through euthanasia, abortion, eugenics, forced sterilisation, and genocide.
For example, upon invading Poland, they immediately did away with the anti-abortion laws. In late 1939 a decree was issued encouraging Polish women to seek abortions. The campaign was called “Auswahlfeiheit” (”Freedom of Choice”).
The Nazis converted entire hospitals for this grim function. In their phrase “life unworthy of life” - promoting “racial hygiene.”
During the Nuremberg Trials, almost all the Nazi defendants were accused of “crimes against humanity”, and part of those ‘crimes’ were promotion of abortion.
Dr. Georg August Weltz, the Nazi physician who conducted the notorious “cold experiments” wrote: “The Hippocratic Oath…is an honorable historical document, which, however, does not altogether fit present times. *** Medicine based upon the principle of nil nocere (”do no harm”) is a very impoverished medicine, and we are unfortunately not in a position to carry on medicine on that simple principle today.” (Trials of the War Criminals Before the Nuremberg Military Tribunals, Washington D.C., 1946-1954, IV:1,081-4)
