From much-loved historian Neil Oliver, comes this beautifully written, kaleidoscopic history of a place with a story like no other.
The British Isles, this archipelago of islands, is to Neil Oliver the best place in the world. From north to south, east to west, it cradles astonishing beauty. The human story here is a million years old and counting. But the tolerant, easygoing peace we enjoy has been hard won. We have made and known the best and worst of times. We have been hero and villain and all else in between, and we have learned some lessons.
The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places is Neil’s very personal account of what makes these islands so special, told through the places that have witnessed the unfolding of our history. Beginning with footprints made in the sand by humankind’s earliest ancestors, he takes us via Romans and Vikings and the flowering of religion through civil war, industrial revolution and two world wars. From windswept headlands to battlefields, ancient trees to magnificent cathedrals, each of his destinations is a place where, somehow, the spirit of the past seems to linger.
Beautifully written, his audiobook is majestic, awe-inspiring, a kaleidoscopic history of a place with a story like no other.
“Everyone should have two copies - one for the car and one for the house to plan journeys. . . a reminder to think more about the places you pass and less about your route, because every British journey is through rich history.” (Edward Stourton)
Also - it’s Neil Oliver, archaeologist and international man of history, nuff said :)

Ahem, some of us find the term “British” Isles to be grotesquely offensive. Perhaps “The Isles” or “Iona” (Islands of the North Atlantic) should be promoted? Especially seeing as we’re in the season finale of Britian, as an entity.
Great upload! (But I feel as though I’ve been microaggressed, as the kids confusedly say).

Of course, it’s the season finale of “Britain” (I was so upset that my orthography was compromised).

@caesar - “This archipelago of islands”. See how he’s covered his bases, go have a spritz, no microaggressing (micro-a-what now?) to be seen here.
A listen to Oliver’s rolling r’s and dulcet Scottish tones will soon (swoon?) have you whistling another tune.

Oliver Cromwell, more like.
February 23rd, 2019
That’s a bit of a harsh comparison now, puir man - what have you got against our Neil of the flowing raven locks?
February 23rd, 2019
It’s all political and geographical, I assure you - not remotely related to, or rooted in, hair.
February 23rd, 2019
Neil (stop hiding behind your bangs) we have inadvertently stepped into a political quagmire - can we add ‘and Ireland’ to the title and proceed in peace
February 23rd, 2019
Step away from the quagmire slowly and carefully…
Compromise solutions are great. Just look at Brexit!

Technically, the British Isles should be, correctly, referred to as “England and the inferior peasantry that it so kindly manages; in order to prevent these plebs from descending into savagery once more.”
Great upload OP. God save The Queen!
And may caeasar963 finally get that potato they’ve always wanted and stop whining about the fact that their ancestors failed to make the grade in war school.
February 23rd, 2019
Why, I nearly choked on my potato! And you’ve also offended the (Scottish) uploader with your mindless racism. You may have prompted an international incident.
Incidentally, the Queen of Perfidious Albion is also descended from an Irish High King (Brian Boru); as is future queen, Kate Middleton. You’re very welcome.
Other than that, this royal house descend from the last Germans in the pack.
Oh, and - just what is England managing now? The fastest route to oblivion? Might have to go back to “war school”…

I say we go back to letting Avalon (nee, Ynys Afallon) go back to being ruled by a watery tart.
February 23rd, 2019
So Father, I hear melting snowflakes is racist now. What’s the official line of the Church is taking on this?
February 23rd, 2019
Down with this sort of thing!
It’d be difficult (slippery?) to give formal Constitutional effect to monarchy by watery tart.
February 23rd, 2019
Thanks for the great uopload! I love that author!
February 23rd, 2019
@ceasar, Oddly enough, per Le Morte d’Arthur, if you cast Boris Johnson in the role of Sir Balin, it work out rather nicely.
February 23rd, 2019
@ssafe - That’s a bit tough, even on the unfortunate Sir Balin - even his conduct was more consistent and coherent than Bonking Boris! Maybe he could depict the Holy Hand-Grenade in the sublime MP & the Holy G!

Great book, well worth listening to.
February 25th, 2019
This is the friendliest conversation on our (irish/english) tumultuous history I have witnessed on the internet so far. Bravo, buachaillí!
February 25th, 2019
@ras-clat - (There’s a very generous uploader cailín, as well!) We’re trying to avoid a hard border on ABB (after all, what do Borders have to do with books?). A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger. Complex negotiations continue.
