What does it mean to be poor in the UK and America? For decades the primary narrative about poverty in both countries is that it has been caused by personal flaws or “bad life decisions” rather than policy choices or economic inequality. This misleading account has become deeply embedded in the public consciousness with serious ramifications for how financially vulnerable people are seen, spoken about, and treated.
Drawing on a two-year multi-platform initiative, this audiobook, by award-winning journalist and author Mary O’Hara, asks how we can overturn this portrayal once and for all. Crucially, she turns to the real experts to try to find answers - the people who live it.

Nice try with the name Ms. O’Hara! You seem to have wasted two-years on a subject that has been treated for centuries and finally arrived at INEQUALITY! Sells more, these days. The cure, of course is: Make Everyone Poor, that is, communism, socialism and all that crap.

No, the ‘cure’ is the same taxation policies we had in place in the 1950s. We weren’t communist then, the rich paid their fair share and social programs had funding.
It’s a complete fiction to claim that the only solution to wealth inequality is communism when we have solved wealth inequality in the past with capitalism, just regulated capitalism.

Great read. Thank you.

@erouting,
you’re nuanced and subtle thinking isn’t appreciated around here.
:)
Seriously though, surely some people are poor because of poor life choices and, honestly, an unlucky role of the dice. And surely others are poor for no fault of their own, or even in spite of being massively talented and making good choices. It’s weird how people one to toss us back and forth from one extreme to the next… it has EVERYTHING to do character and personal responsibility, or it has EVERYTHING to do with nurture and/or discrimination or lack of opportunity. Seems like real life must be more complex than that.

The insights being offered here are almost unprecedentedly (and terrifyingly) coherent.

Don’t speak too soon. Someone will come along to blame George Soros, Barack Obama, and Ringo Starr before you can pack away your tin foil hat.
