Thanks for the contextual note, prick. This book was published in 1908 and the author is about who you’d expect him to be, so no surprise.

Well, even the designation “Dark Ages” is long obsolete (actually essentially outmoded by original date of publication). We’d have “Late Antiquity” & “Early Middle Ages” now. For an “age” to be “dark” there needs must be no available sources. While there are no Arabic sources for the successful Islamic invasions of Christian, Jewish & Persian lands, we instead have documentary sources from the literate peoples being invaded. The Arabs were largely preliterate at the time - this constitutes a great historiographical loss. Arabs subsequently received Classical learning from Christian & Jewish scholars, from Syria in the main.
The difficulties of the time, for Europe & environs, were caused by the constant barbaric attacks & destruction from without. This “inner recounting” & threat would consequently be the burden of the book.
