In We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement, Akinyele Omowale Umoja argues that armed resistance was critical to the Southern freedom struggle and the dismantling of segregation and Black disenfranchisement. Intimidation and fear were central to the system of oppression in most of the Deep South. To overcome the system of segregation, Black people had to overcome fear to present a significant challenge to White domination. As the civil rights movement developed, armed self-defense and resistance became a significant means by which the descendants of enslaved Africans overturned fear and intimidation and developed different political and social relationships between Black and White Mississippians.
This riveting historical narrative reconstructs the armed resistance of Black activists, their challenge of racist terrorism, and their fight for human rights.

woah wait a minute, i thought guns are bad and evil, how does this compute with social justice movements? So guns are only good when fighting racism, but not when defending one’s own life? Can someone on the left please explain this mental gymnastics?

Unfortunately, the only language the white man understands is the language of violence. That’s the only way to get through to him, and the one of the things that truly scares him the most is a bunch of black men holding guns. I support brown people learning how to use guns in order to scare the white man back into his place.

@privateero Two things. First, this is an academic history book about events surrounding 1967. It isn’t a book about contemporary politics.
Secondly, if you or anyone else wants to understand what is going on, keep in mind if you talk about “the Left” and you include everything from the right wing of the Democratic party to Black revolutionaries, Anarchists, radical environmentalists, any number of more-or-less single issue activist groups, you will be confused. Groups can form coalitions with each other at times, but don’t necessarily have anything in common.

@Molt19, yes, and my frustration is when the mainstream left (in general) want to restrict our freedoms, but have no issue with the state having the monopoly on guns and committing mass murder, and perpetrating horrendous crimes in the form of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Vietnam, WW2 etc, and how hypocritical it all is. Let’s further disarm the populations against history’s leading cause of death-the state, because of the statistical equivalent of mosquito bites.
@boneswithfiddle yes i agree, i guess when most people reference the “left”, they are discussing mainstream views of democrats, liberals, and general normies in the west. Interesting history nonetheless than can hopefully unite the left and right on the common enemies of freedom.
