As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014, and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as ‘black rage’, historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in the Washington Post showing that this was, instead, ‘white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames,’ she wrote, ‘everyone had ignored the kindling.’
Since 1865 and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, every time African Americans have made advances towards full participation in our democracy, white reaction has fueled a deliberate and relentless rollback of their gains. The end of the Civil War and Reconstruction was greeted with the Black Codes and Jim Crow; the Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision was met with the shutting down of public schools throughout the South while taxpayer dollars financed segregated white private schools; the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 triggered a coded but powerful response, the so-called Southern Strategy and the War on Drugs that disenfranchised millions of African Americans while propelling presidents Nixon and Reagan into the White House.
Carefully linking these and other historical flashpoints when social progress for African Americans was countered by deliberate and cleverly crafted opposition, Anderson pulls back the veil that has long covered actions made in the name of protecting democracy, fiscal responsibility, or protection against fraud, rendering visible the long lineage of white rage.

anansisan I can always count on you for solid non-fiction, but this one in particular is interesting and relevant (just look at the other comment). Any chance you have/could get Mitchell Duneier’s “Ghetto” or Mark Thompson’s “Enough Said”? Or even Sadie Doyle’s “Trainwreck”? Seems like they would fit your interests. Anyway keep up the good work!

I am nearly done ‘reading’ and the volume is fabulous.
@nim Human trafficking as well as more traditional slavery still continues in parts of Africa. I have been to West Africa, and in Mali it is no secret. Human trafficking is discussed openly..or was. I haven’t been back since 2006.

The problem with this book, and it is a problem with most works about this narrative, is the juxtaposition of “civil” rights and “economic” rights. The two are equated or at the very least said to be unable to exist separately / severaly.
It always comes down to Carol Anderson putting on such a sweet face as she talks about the rights of (black) people to housing and medicine and education, things that have a cost borne by taxpayers. Poor white kids in West Virginia go uneducated and this is something she chooses to avoid. Poor white kids cannot afford college yet do not, by definition, qualify for aid and opportunity designed to increase “participation” of “minorities”.
She and her ilk are strong supporters of overtly race-focused institutions like the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She is quick to point out the few cases of police abuse and slow to acknowledge the millions of cases of black on black crime.
She has an agenda. She is disingenuous. Her beliefs, followed to their natural conclusion of preferential treatment of blacks is plain and simple racism.

The major problem with the whole race issue is the perpetuation by both white and black that race actually exists. Biologically there is no such thing as race. In either white or black gene populations there is MORE variation in DNA than between. This kind of exceedingly dangerous conspiracy theory nonsense has lead to immeasurable human suffering. It won’t end until we abandon these foolish categories that simply do not exist anywhere but within the minds of truly monstrous people.

I just created a torrent for White Fragility, thinking that sharing an audiobook would allow me to download one — like some torrent sites for movies that I’m familiar with. Then I found that I needed to pay to join anyway. Forget that. I’m deleting my torrent upload NOW!!!
