I read this a long time ago, and remember it as a readable and engaging introduction to a modern version of the so-called “documentary hypothesis,” full of persuasive examples of how the Torah must have been edited together from multiple different earlier versions of the stories and texts. Friedman also adds some theories of his own about the motivations for the various writings: these seem plausible the way he tells it, but not as solidly grounded in evidence.
I understand that the most up-to-date scholarship questions parts of the documentary hypothesis’s model for how the Torah was compiled (not the fact that there were separate sources, but what exactly they were and the particular proposed history for how they were created and combined). Still, it’s a classic explanation that all later theories takes as a point of departure, and offers a good starting point for those who wish to learn about the history of the Old Testament.
So think of this book as the ‘Jurassic Park’ of biblical text criticism: even if the scientific details are Hollywoodized and a few decades out of date (no feathered dinos!), it’s a thoroughly entertaining presentation of the classic idea of what dinosaurs were like. Then if you’re interested in learning more, you can sweat the details later.

Not about this book. I recall reading a book long ago that detailed the history of modern day, “religious groups”. The author claimed most started out as cults. Included were - The Jehovah Witnesses, the Mormons, and many others which I have forgotten.
It was a very interesting and revealing read. I can’t recall the books title or author. If anyone has any idea what they may be please comment. Or if anyone knows of any similar books that deal with this subject I’d like to hear about them. Thanks.

Oh. I loved this book (2nd edition) when I read it years ago. It is about the authors of the Torah and to a lesser extent the rest of the Hebrew Bible. I highly recommended his university course on coursecraft.net (but it seems like it is down at the moment.)
A similar book is James Kugel’s How to Read the Bible.

Thx to Gooms, and kudos to the above contributors for their sober insights, rational analysis & courtesy. That kind of conduct is unfortunately almost unheard in this area. The absence of mindless hate makes me suspect that I’ve somehow journeyed to an alternate dimension. Fascinating subject.
