From 1942 until the end of World War II, the Soviets had a secret weapon: women. The 588th Night Bomber Regiment was one of the most decorated units; each member had flew more than 800 missions by the end of the war, and twenty-three were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union (the highest distinction).
Despite all the awards, the unit is largely forgot now. This book looks at the history of one of the most daring aviations units ever commissioned.

I may be wrong, but I think American bomber crews only had to fly 24 missions before they were permitted to return “stateside”.Some/many probably flew more. I’ve not heard about English bomber crews having a required number of missions. Maybe there was no set number.
As for flying 800 mission, if that means 800 mission over hostile territory, then I find it hard to believe that any would survive.

Yeah, but they flew at night…your odds of returning go up dramatically. But 800 is incredible. They would turn off their engines and drop their bomb load in silence. That would be terrifying. I believe the Nazis are the ones that named them the Night Witches. Bad ass group of women.

Thanks for posting this rmoor. Have been curious about them since the band Sabaton did a song about them titled Night witches. It’s up on youtube for anyone interested.

@plasticnapalm
Utter tosh. Have you asked any Lancaster or Wellington crews about it?
(For the benefit of any other sectics, those were RAF night bombers)
