Our Crime Was Being Jewish contains 576 vivid memories of 358 Holocaust survivors. These are the true, insider stories of victims, told in their own words. They include the experiences of teenagers who saw their parents and siblings sent to the gas chambers; of starving children beaten for trying to steal a morsel of food; of people who saw their friends commit suicide to save themselves from the daily agony they endured. The recollections are from the start of the war—the home invasions, the Gestapo busts, and the ghettos—as well as the daily hell of the concentration camps and what actually happened inside.
Six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, and this hefty collection of stories told by its survivors is one of the most important books of our time. It was compiled by award-winning author Anthony S. Pitch, who worked with sources such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to get survivors’ stories compiled together and to supplement them with images from the war. These memories must be told and held onto so what happened is documented; so the lives of those who perished are not forgotten—so history does not repeat itself.

It is indeed truly horrifying. Over just two days (Sep 29–30, 1941) SS & German police units & their auxiliaries, under the guidance of members of Einsatzgruppe C, murdered an enormous number of the Jewish population who remained in Kyiv. The massacre occurred at a ravine called Babyn Yar (“Babi Yar” in English). At the time, the ravine was located just outside the city.
The victims were brought to the site, forced to undress, & then compelled to enter the ravine. Sonderkommando 4a, a special detachment from Einsatzgruppe C under SS-Standartenführer Paul Blobel, shot them in groups. According to reports sent to Einsatzgruppen HQ in Berlin, 33,771 Jews were massacred during this two-day period.
The massacre at Babyn Yar was one of many mass shootings perpetrated by the Nazis beginning in 1941. It was also one of the largest mass killings (”special actions”) at a single location during WWII.
Of course, with the multiple death camps this industrialised slaughter could be perpetrated in a more systematic fashion. Historians estimate that around 1,1 million human beings perished in Auschwitz-Birkenau (the largest death camp), during the less than 5 yrs of its operation.

My mother’s side of the family was killed outside Kyiv. Her mother was in Sweden so avoided the killing. I appreciate that their loss is remembered. Due to the nazi oppression, she gave up her Jewish faith after she married my grandfather. Till the day she died, she was scared to say she was Jewish. She told me that it will happen again as hate is easy and understanding is hard. People will always take the easy path. Ty for the upload.

There were some significant efforts conducted by individuals in various countries & by assorted religious & secular groups, such as the Kindertransport. However, states were reprehensibly negligent, particularly in light of Kristallnacht, and express nazi pronouncements & objectives. It was a century of genocide.
When we condemn FDR et al, we must admit that there’s a concomitant duty of care to the refugee in all ages & crises. Canada & the US took Irish people in when they were being killed off & at risk back in Ireland.
We like to think that we’d have done better, but that’s ever an imponderable.
