It’s a bit broader than Caledonia. Vikings, of course; Tudors, rival monarchs in exile, Florentine banking, French chivalry & chivalric culture, slave systems of the (Middle) East, Mongolian (or Scythian) horse lords, the Wars of the Roses, St. Joan, Francis of Assisi, siege of Constantinople, etc. etc.
Broader than the richness of the medieval era also, if one wants to delve deeper.

Caesar I think that the author was more trying to use Scottish history in specific to break down some of the historical realities of the events from the books/show, rather than saying that all of the series history comes from that one small area of the world. The war of the roses for example, it’s well.known that that was a very large influence on the series, so I don’t think the author was trying to deny those facts, just give more historical context to things. Just my thoughts.

You’re right of course. There’s no shortage of historical inspiration in there, which is one of the most enjoyable features - trying to spot it all.
