Against a backdrop of Islamophobia, Europeans are increasingly airbrushing from history their cultural debt to the Muslim world. But this legacy lives on in some of Europe’s most recognizable buildings, from Notre-Dame Cathedral to the Houses of Parliament.
This book reveals the Arab and Islamic roots of Europe’s architectural heritage. Diana Darke traces ideas and styles from vibrant Middle Eastern centers like Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo, via Muslim Spain, Venice, and Sicily into Europe. She describes how medieval crusaders, pilgrims, and merchants encountered Arab Muslim culture on their way to the Holy Land; and explores more recent artistic interaction between Ottoman and Western cultures, including Sir Christopher Wren’s inspirations in the “Saracen” style of Gothic architecture.
Recovering this long yet overlooked history of architectural “borrowing”, Stealing from the Saracens is a rich tale of cultural exchange, shedding new light on Europe’s greatest landmarks.
“Although some might dispute the Arabic influence in Gothic and other architecture in Europe, the author makes a compelling case. I learned quite a bit about how this came to be and it fits right in with the influences in the cuisines of especially France and Italy that I have come to know. I was saddened by the architectural treasures lost in the Syrian civil war recently.” - Goodreads

Thank you so much

Always useful to remind ourselves that beneficial cultural interaction is possible. Thanks again, jo.

Fantastic Book! it’s good we have it here. I read it before and it opened my mind about story of architecture in the middle ages.

@chrisxiii persians 100% stole everything from Mesopotamia. they never added one thing original or any new style. Early Muslims took everything at their hand and with it they created a new very High Culture its art and Architecture traces can be seen all around the mediterranean. From Spain to central Asia.

“Interaction” is the proper appellation all through. As regards this particular “allegation” it is absolute nonsense and betrays a manifest ignorance of human history, thus confusing so-called Indo-Saracenic (a British coinage) revivalist architecture of the Mughals with the Gothic and Neo-classical revivalist period in Europe. Most of the Mughal’s structures were actually routed - the other way round - in the Gothic and the neoclassical modes and were indeed mostly built with Italian help! This set off a wave of cross influences on both sides in the 18th and 19th century. As for the earlier history, you have at least ten Middle East Empires in addition to the Greeks and Romans that predated the Islamic Empire to chose from.It is quite stupid and malicious to confuse a mainly honest and fair stand against any phobia with the combined history of human craftsmanship. Even the “Saracens” themselves, whatever you mean by this ever changing designation, do not champion this claim.

Bravo, marcodiluce!

It’s “a rich tale of cultural exchange” so of course the title is “Stealing From the Saracens.”

@marcodiluce That is not the point If you look exactly you would find that eurocentric white supremist approach which have taken over have canceled everything influence related by the east on europe by calling it european or Greek without mentioning the clear middle eastern islamic and pre islamic influences which are many and really Apparent. After reading this Book I really discovered How important syria was in the story of Architecture and religion. it is really unfortunate and sad how many things were destroyed by Russian,Assad,Iranian, and US bombing throu8gh all of these evil political games. it also opened my mind to the gothic term and how it was used and for what reasons. it’s mythical term just how the eastern Roman Empire is called so wrongly the byzantine Empire. borrowing is not stealing but if you borrow and then hide it by fabricating lies then it becomes stealing.

Problems of course arise when people insist on viewing historical events thru the prism of current nationalisms - all such nationalisms - this is a vacuous exercise. Where the incomparable achievements of the Indians (specifically in mathematics) & Greeks, most prominently, are stolen, denied, fabricated, and presented falsely. Plagiarism upon stilts. Engage with the factual hx record, no comforting nationalist fairytales. I’ve encountered the ludicrous result of these ahistorical deceptions times without number.

“Caesar963″ spouting woke drivel as usual
The muslims took the Byzantine art, architecture etc - and the wokies made out they’d invented it. They even had Byzantine architects and masons building their mosques in Spain. The “Saracens” never claimed otherwise. Its the arrogant “make it up as we go along” wokies like the hilariously misnamed “Caesar963″ and this “author” doing that

No one stole more than they did. And look behind almost every Arabic name and you will see a Persian, a Jew or a Greek. Islamic Arabs never actually produced any scientific or cultural innovations of note.
